Netball Namibia (NN) has secured two sprung wooden floors for the upcoming Africa Netball Cup slated for Swakopmund in December.
Namibia is set to host the Africa Netball Cup from December 9 to 12, with the competition taking place at the multipurpose MTC Dome. To meet World Netball’s requirements, two sprung wooden floors have been secured at a combined cost of N$3 million. These floors, designed to absorb shock and reduce injury risk, will be essential for hosting the international event.
The acquisition was made possible through a mystery stakeholder, whose identity will be revealed soon. Connie Samaria, vice president of the Namibia Netball (NN) and chairperson of the local organizing committee, expressed pride in securing these floors, which signify Namibia’s readiness to host major international netball events. Previously, Namibia faced challenges in hosting such events due to the lack of these specialized floors.
Hosting the competition will not only boost Namibia’s standing in the netball world but also contribute to the local economy. The event is expected to benefit Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, as the participating countries will require various services. Samaria emphasized that hosting such an event is part of Namibia’s long-term strategic plan to improve its netball rankings.
Ten nations have confirmed their participation in the competition, with two more nations likely to join soon. Namibia’s Desert Jewels, who finished as runners-up in 2023, are eager to improve their position this year. Samaria highlighted that the competition will expose players to international standards, helping to develop future teams like the under-19 and under-21 squads.
