The Nedbank Volley 1st Tournament, held at the Embandu Soccer Field in Oshakati last Saturday, was won by the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) volleyball team. The NAC team emerged as champions, claiming the grand prize of N$ 6,000 from Nedbank Namibia, along with medals and a trophy, at the one-day competition. With over 100 players participating in the two-a-side and six-a-side competitions, respectively, the event showcased the immense popularity of volleyball in the region.
Hillary “Dux” Imbuwa, spokesperson for the Namibia Volleyball Federation, expressed satisfaction with the successful games, citing positive feedback from both the teams and spectators. He emphasized the importance of events like the Nedbank Volley 1st, providing non-professional players with the opportunity to experience the thrill of competing at the same level as professionals. Imbuwa also highlighted the potential for corporate organizations to utilize such games as a platform for fostering employee camaraderie outside of the office. “We received an incredible response to the planning, and we are enthusiastic about making next year’s event even bigger and better,” Imbuwa remarked.
Lucas Huanda, captain of the NAC team, expressed his delight at clinching the Nedbank Volley 1st title, especially after missing out on the 2022 edition. “Given our poor performance in last year’s tournament, we are overjoyed with this victory. It’s our redemption story; we came prepared and brought home the trophy,” Huanda exclaimed. He encouraged fellow volleyball players to participate in next year’s competition, aiming to elevate the sport and make it one of the most popular in the region.
Selma Kaulinge, Nedbank Namibia’s Communication and Public Relations Manager, commended the teams, organizers, spectators, and vendors for their hard work in making the event a resounding success. “We transformed the Embandu Stadium into a sea of green and once again left a significant impact on Namibian volleyball. We extend our gratitude to our supporting sponsors and organizers for their contributions to the success of this event, but most importantly, we want to thank the participants for dedicating their time amidst their busy schedules to take part in this tournament. Your efforts have been duly recognized, and we remain committed to furthering the growth of the sport in the coming years,” Kaulinge stated.
The Nedbank Volley 1st Tournament enjoyed sponsorship from the Far North Volleyball Association, Windhoek Draught, Omulunga Radio, and Coca Cola.
